How to Make the Most of Your Lawn Care Hobby Without Going to the Store

With all of us stuck at home, it’s a great time to spruce up your yard and even create a garden in your backyard if you haven’t already. As we all think about our lawn care “grocery” list, we should also think about how to maintain this hobby in the safest way possible. Below are some ways to keep up your lawn while also keeping you and others safe.

Check your current supplies

Before making a trip to a store, check what current supplies you have. You may be surprised to find an item you need hidden behind a stack of something else, or find out that you have more mulch than you thought. Not only does this help you save money on supplies you may already have, it helps make sure these supplies don’t go to waste. All it takes is a bit of looking around!

Search for lawn care alternatives around your home

It’s happened to all of us – we’re cooking up a recipe, and suddenly realize that we’re missing an ingredient. Instead of going to the store, you look up “flour alternatives”. Same applies for gardening – you can utilize your creativity and items around the house to find a doable alternative. For example, food items such as jalapeno seeds can be used to plant something new when you find yourself out of store-bought seeds.

Check with friends and neighbors – from a social distance

Back before technology allowed us to get so many things quickly and efficiently, many people went to their friends or neighbors when they were missing something essential and needed it right away. While you may not need a bag of mulch so quickly, it’s worth at least texting your friends or neighbors to see if they have an excess supply of something, or may be looking to get rid of something. This can help them get rid of whatever they don’t need, and you get what you do need. If they do have something, have them drop it off at your door and then text you so you can get it safely. Otherwise, make sure you wear your mask and stay 6 feet away!

Shop online

Though many stores like Home Depot, Lowes, and Costco are considered essential businesses and are still open, these stores offer many of the same products online as in-store. Before going to the store in-person, check what they have online. By shopping online, you can keep you, your family, and essential workers safe while still prioritizing lawn care.

Seek advice online and through others

If you’re someone who goes to the store looking for an employee’s advice on what you might need or the best option for your needs, you can still find this advice online. Home Depot and Lowes have great lawn care and “DIY Projects and Ideas” sections on their websites, which include how-to articles to help you tackle your home projects with step-by-step instructions. There are also some great review websites out there to help you make a decision. And if you’re still looking for more advice, no better excuse to call a friend!

Remember that just because your lawn care hobby may not be considered “essential” during this time, that doesn’t mean it’s not important to you, and that you can’t still enjoy doing it. We hope that with these tips, you can still find joy in making your lawn beautiful in a safe and fun way.
