Memorial Day weekend will be different for everyone this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy it. With a little creativity and participation from the whole family, you can stay entertained the whole weekend with these fun backyard ideas.
Beach in your backyard
Many of us will be missing the beach this Memorial Day weekend, but that doesn’t mean you can’t create your own beach-like space in your backyard. All you’ll need are some beach chairs, a kiddie pool, and a cooler to store cold drinks and fresh snacks. Sit back and relax in the sun with your favorite shades and a good book. To get the full experience, play a soundtrack of waves crashing in the background so when you close your eyes, you can really pretend like you’re at the beach.
Sports sets for all fitness levels
If you’re an active type, there are plenty of ways to stay active and have fun outside from the safety of your own backyard. You can try an outdoor volleyball/badminton set or play your favorite indoor games like Connect Four and Jenga outside with these giant outdoor lawn games. If you want to go a bit fancier, what about trying some croquet? Bonus points if you dress up to play!
Turn a Backyard BBQ into a Picnic
Memorial Day weekend is the official kick-off of summer, and what’s summer without grilling? Have a classic barbeque with hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and hotdogs with corn and watermelon – and whatever else says summer to you. Assign each person to one task – someone to grill the burger, someone to shuck the corn, and another person to cut the watermelon so everyone gets involved. To bring it up a notch, make it a picnic by taking the food to your yard and setting up a nice blanket and basket setting. Even better, Rachio’s smart sprinkler controllers can get your yard in top shape. Plus no more waiting around after application. Apply Thrive, lay your picnic blanket down, and enjoy your day!
Have a Field Day
Remember back in elementary school when you used to have field days, complete with team t-shirts and competitive games of tug-of-war and kickball? Bring that back this Memorial Day weekend with our very own Field Day schedule. From morning until late afternoon, we have fun games planned for you to do with your family and even a lunch break built in. Remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day and keep the competition a friendly one. It’s all about the fun and games (and no one should get hurt!).
Memorial Day weekend has always been a weekend for spending time outside. Though you may not be able to spend it outside in the places you usually do – beaches, parks – you can still recreate those settings in your backyard and use some accessories to keep everyone entertained.
